The time has come: 7 years after the premiere at the International Rome Film Festival, the first English-language film directed by the author of the blockbuster Parasite is released. Snowpiercer is a brutal dystopia by Bong Joon Ho, in which freeloaders violate the prescribed laws of the “train of life”. Chris Evans, Jamie Bell, Tilda Swinton, Kang-ho Song, John Hurt, Vlad Ivanov and Ed Harris took part in this quite extraordinary project. Snowpiercer will be screened in the Centralny cinema from January 20 to 26, and in the Pioner cinema from January 23 to 29.
The action takes place in a not-so-distant future where the Earth has been quickly overtaken by a new Ice Age. All life has been wiped out, except the safe Snowpiercer – the train that ceaselessly circles the globe. In the front of the train lives the social elite – they, as usual, live lives of luxury. Those in the tail are stuck in cramped quarters having poor living conditions – poverty, diseases and cruel overseers. A rebellion slowly begins to brew under the leadership of the main character Curtis, but every noble idea has a dark side…
Director Bong Joon Ho is the winner of the Palme d’Or for the main feature of the last Cannes Film Festival Parasite, which he called “a comedy without clowns, a tragedy without villains”. His detective Mother (2013) was also awarded for Best Director by the Asian Film Academy. The dystopian Thriller Snowpiercer by Bong Joon Ho is loosely based on the French graphic novel Le Transperceneige by Jacques Lob.
“The French graphic novel was absolutely great and unique, but I had to come up with a completely new story and characters to create a dynamic film filled with cinematic visuals. I wanted to show pure energy and the way it spills out in the film. I don’t want to simplify the film calling it action, because inside this conflict there are multiple emotions – joy, sadness, love and happiness – the emotions we have all experienced” says the Director.
The film had its world premiere on July 29, 2013. The film’s distribution rights were sold to a total of 167 countries, a record for a Korean film. In 2014, Snowpiercer was five times nominated for the Asian Film Academy awards, including Best Film, Best Director and Best Screenplay awards. In 2015, the film was nominated for the Saturn Award for Best Action or Adventure Film. In the CIS, Snowpiercer is released for the first time.
Chris Evans, the lead actor, was repeatedly nominated for the Saturn Award for Best Actor for the films Captain America: The First Avenger and Avengers: Endgame. Tilda Swinton, the winner of the Academy Awards, Saturn Award and awards at the Berlin and Venice Film Festivals, as well as Jamie Bell (Billy Elliot), Kang-ho Song (Parasite), John Hurt (The Elephant Man), Vlad Ivanov (The Whistlers) and Ed Harris (The Truman Show) also starred in the Thriller.
“Bong Joon Ho is so passionate about telling his story, he does it with such boyish enthusiasm and excitement that the Hollywood machine never dreamed of,” says Ksenia Reutova, private correspondent. “Snowpiercer is a great example of postmodernism at its best “ – Efim Gugnin, DTF. “Known for his truly global thinking, the Director made his English-language debut with a boldness bordering on recklessness. He made it not just powerful. That was huge!”- Anastasia Belokurova, Zavtra newspaper. Josh Friedman, screenwriter (War of the Worlds, The Black Dahlia): “It’s great the way the best sci-fi is great – houghtful, political, funny, scary and sly. And it’s on a train. A big f—ing train. What more could you want?
